Introducing Mill

Final HeroBin

Incite Community,

Three years ago, I became obsessed with food waste and how much we throw away.

It’s staggering. Turns out food takes up more space in US landfills than anything else (24%) and households are the #1 contributor (51% is from our kitchens, not farms, restaurants, or grocery stores).  Throughout the pandemic, I couldn’t stop thinking about our trash at home. When I left Nest, I didn’t plan to start another company. But the scale of the climate challenge we face is just too big. So I’m back to building, and I want to share more with you about why.

Most people don’t realize just how bad it is to throw a banana peel in the trash. Food in landfills wastes nutrients and is terrible for the environment as it emits methane, a greenhouse gas that’s 80x more potent than CO2 emissions and traps more heat.

Not to mention, it doesn’t feel good to waste food. At home, it’s gross, smelly and creates the unwanted chore of taking out trash bags. Wasted food is an everyday behavior that affords one of the most practical and effective ways we can take climate action.

So I did what we often encourage others to do at Incite — I rolled my sleeves up and got to work.

I’m so excited for you to be among the first we share Mill with today.

My team has built a practical new system to prevent waste, making it easy for customers to take steps at home that are better for our kitchens and our planet. The Mill Membership is an end-to-end service that takes the headache out of dealing with the food you can’t or don’t eat.

Here’s how it works:

  • Every member receives a kitchen bin that dries, shrinks and de-stinks your kitchen scraps overnight, turning them into Food Grounds™. The Mill kitchen bin isn’t a composting device. It’s designed to conserve nutrients so we can keep them in the food system.

  • Once your bin is full – which can take a few weeks – you can schedule a pick up for your Food Grounds in the Mill app and send them back to us via USPS.

  • The best part? We are working to turn your Food Grounds into food for chickens. It takes a lot of land, water, fertilizer, and effort to get food from the farm to our tables, so it’s important for our food’s nutrients to stay in the food system. With Mill, food stays food and becomes delicious all over again.

You can sign up for your membership today at Mill.com.  Memberships come with a Mill Kitchen Bin, shipping in Spring 2023.

I hope you’ll help us send food to farms, not landfills and take real climate action from your kitchen.

When it comes to our climate, as I often tell my kids (in the true Jedi spirit), do or do not. There is no try.
